Remaining bugs hacked edition

I'm making a list of the remaining bugs that still need to be fixed, these are only the ones that I remember that still need fixing.. (please add any I forgot .. or any new ones you find) - do we still have bugs with submitting drawings? (there were reports of white screen after pressing the submit button, not being able to press the button etc.) (update: turns out this happens when there was something wrong with the claim -- not sure how to solve it but now you get an error message) - Elle reported a bug on her school computer (I assume a chromebook variant?) that I could not reproduce yet and happens when switching between tabs during drawing [https://prnt.sc/J2mt3XuI7ERM](https://prnt.sc/J2mt3XuI7ERM) - there are still problems with some touchpad devices where gui items are off screen (I remember Painovoima and Carrot reporting about these) (update: from the screenshots Painovoima sent me 👍 it seems to happen on portrait mode on tablets .. there is a quick fix now but it might be better to completely re-arrange the tools for portrait) - 4k monitors need to zoom in to use the drawing tools [under testing] - the caching issue (or avatar refresh issue) is supposedly solved now(?) (at least I have not heard any recent complaints) - I broke the markdowns and empty bracket links and images e.g []() ![]() no longer work [X]

I added a fix to the markdown image links .. but turns out the browser also caches javascript files (and css too.. to make things interesting I suppose).. so it might take some time until the fix is visible (even if you do a reload on the page)

I can't like any panels or strips

2022-07-16 14:56:41
`Yitsul` hmm.. this is strange I don't see any obvious bugs .. and the fact that you can post images also rules out some of the problems I would suspect .. I need to know a little more: are you on desktop PC or tablet/phone? which browser you use? (firefox, chrome, opera etc.) (also have you tried it on other devices and/or different browsers?)

Yitsul

desktop PC, chrome, and no

Peyo

2022-07-16 16:13:30
`Yitsul` this is getting even more mysterious.. I don't see anything wrong with your account and chrome on PC should be the platform with no problems (the site is optimised for this) so what exactly happens when you click on a like button (star or heart)? does it reloads the page and the counter doesn't increase? or you cannot click on it at all?

Peyo
#7
2022-07-16 18:38:51
so far I suspect that it might be caused by a javascript error on an older browser.. (unless you use the latest version of chrome?) (btw is there anything else that seems broken? e.g. can you edit comments ? etc.)

Yitsul
#8
2022-07-16 20:04:58
yes I can edit comments, I'm using a 64 bit version of the browser

`Yitsul` please check if you can star any of the images on this page: [/minstrip/319](/minstrip/319) (it's Electra's [Backgrounds](/strip/319) rendered in a special minimal view)

Yitsul
#10
2022-07-17 00:26:50
yep, I can give stars

Peyo
#11
2022-07-17 00:40:14
`Yitsul` so what happens when you try to give a star on [/strip/319](/strip/319) ? do you see any errors in inspect mode? ###### (you can check by right clicking on the page and at the bottom of the menu select Inspect)

Yitsul
#12
2022-07-17 00:51:35
a star pops up next to the image I liked, but in my profile, it will say I haven't liked anything yet.

Peyo
#13
2022-07-17 01:18:47
`Yitsul` that is normal: your profile only counts the strips you liked (what happens if you click on the heart on the bottom of the page?)

Yitsul
#14
2022-07-17 01:38:46
a heart doesn't appear in normal view or ministrip

Peyo
#15
2022-07-17 01:46:16
`Yitsul` ok so let me get this straight: (in normal view) you don't have a Likes: section on the bottom of the page? (.. or is the grey heart missing next to it?) ![](https://i.imgur.com/6tLXiFk.png)

Yitsul
#16
2022-07-17 01:54:20
Only the grey heart next to it is missing

Peyo

2022-07-17 04:05:28
`Yitsul` hmm.. it seems you see the site partly as someone logged out yet you can use it as logged in .. i'm not even sure how is that possible could you try logging out and logging in again and see if it persists? (if that doesn't work the only thing left is to try another browser and see if it has the same problem)

Peyo
#18
2022-07-26 21:07:16
`Yitsul` do you still have this problem?

yes

`Yitsul` do you have a special chrome version perhaps? what does it say under about? ( chrome://settings/help )

Yitsul

I found the problem! it was adblock plus! I just had to whitelist the site

👍 neat! (still it's strange: I also got adblock plus and at least two other adblockers installed and neither detected anything.. and there aren't supposed to be any ads anywhere either)

2 VERY minuscule nitpicks (these barely count as bugs, really): -hovering over the "GROUPS" tab shows you the same flavor text as the "TOP" tab ("Greatest artworks") -on the wiki's front page, the "set backdrop for animation" help link redirects you to the "locations/places" category

Don't know if it's considered a bug, but... When trying to draw on phone, it keeps scrolling the canvas around (up and down), the result being as if you'd be drawing in a moving car. Could be because the phones model i was using is quite... long... and has the canvas on top with some awkward free space below, i think it was ment more to run things in some sort of sideways mode. Wonder if there is a way to lock the site in place, or... Run it side ways. Other then that every other things seems to work just fine! As far as my test went...

`CocoSplat` yes it's a bug alright it's a somewhat easy fix: I just need to figure out what css setting to change can you tell me a little more? e.g. what phone you use (ios, android?) and which browser you use on it? (firefox, chrome, safari?) and I assume it only does it zoomed in and only for the canvas? Edit: so far I tried on my android with the latest chrome - seems to work fine (with some new graphical glitches - but that is probably due to my phones gpu)

Android, one of those funky ones with a pen... samsung or something... don't know the name ahaha , apparantly it's "DuckDuckGo" as default, Gonna have to try out a different browser! See if that has something to do with it! And nope, it does it in general, it's like trying to move the page around... It's as if... As if i would be scrolling up and down with my mouse wheel, it is after all how you scroll around in websites with the pen! OH but no matter! My precision is terrible to even attempt to draw on it, so i don't think it's a important fix, i just did to try it out hah, altho in that regard... of my precision being poopy garbage. How possible could be a stabilizer!? You know, that thing that let's you draw some more smoother lines by being a little behind on your traces! EDIT: Wtf... I just tried it out, In google chrome it runs as it should, But the default browser does that weird thing...? As far as i'm aware, DuckDuckGo is a extention? Iiiii dunno... Well THAT'S weird.... I suppose that's solved right there! Hah

that is strange - maybe it's related to the stylus? 🤔 anyway i'll look into that one also it could be the default browser - for some reason on android there is usually a factory default browser with a very outdated chromium (that is part of the OS so you have a browser even if you haven't installed any) 🤔 anyway please check if you can if it happens with the latest chrome on android (aka if it happens with every browser on your phone) strangely enough we supposed to already have line smoothing - i'm not sure how to make it even smoother 🤔 Edit: nevermind - I only just noticed your edit

Tested in on Firefox too and it runs good too, It's probably that, The default browser prolly runs something outdated or something like that... Chrome was up to date as far as i know, and it ran good! Well that's funny, I suppose that's more a me thing honestly, In drawing software i pump that thing up to max of max! I guess i'm faaaaarr to spoiled with the laggy traces 😔 HOnestly it's good as is, the line thingy, i honestly should just get use to drawing confident lines bahaha, cuz even on paper i struggle to draw lines! It's like... "WHERE'S THE SMOOTH TOOL!?"

Peyo

2023-08-07 20:27:41
I just remembered: that could be also because of the phone we ran into this early on when Wizard's tablet was not smoothing out the curves: [https://pchutney.com/strip/68](https://pchutney.com/strip/68) so long story short the regular brush uses the default javascript line curve: (and this is sometimes cheapened out on phones - they break it down to several straight lines to save some performance and there is no control over it) ![https://pchutney.com/gui/icon_brush.png](https://pchutney.com/gui/icon_brush.png) and the bristle uses a slower method one that works on all phones but if you draw fast there are holes: ![https://pchutney.com/gui/icon_bigbrush.png](https://pchutney.com/gui/icon_bigbrush.png) you could compare the two to see if the smoothing is correct on your phone 🤔

CocoSplat

Actually, The lines come out pretty good! Tested it right now, Even when i do some very sharp curves it mimics perfectly how i traced it. SO i guess that does conclude it on it being me! Ahahaha The only "weird" thing is that with the pen sensitivity when i draw lines fast it goes from thick to slim, wich i'm sure now THAT is something that perhaps is because of how the phone operates? Or... I could even be at fault!

Peyo
#32
2023-08-08 17:31:41
i'm afraid pen sensitivity is also a hit-or-miss - another gamble based on the OS and browser for now I didn't touch the setting because for some people it works perfectly and on my rig the touch sensitivity doesn't work at all so for now there is only a setting to disable it altogether this is definitely the fault of people who did the browser - for now I'm not sure what else to do about it 😔

Woops looks like i found a security breach- Someone call the Chutney guard!!! Also not sure if i should just post it here on how to do it or... through email or somethin' just to make sure it doesn't fall on a malevolant eye that is lurking around >.> can never be too sure!

Ooh `Peyo` I recently have had trouble viewing animations on the site. After they play through all the frames once (or it seems like possibly less on ping pong animations) they stop working really. I don't know if it's my side or if other people notice it but I thought I'd make mention of it.

Peyo

`Scones and Cones` that is probably a javascript error somewhere 🤔 which browser do you use?

`Peyo` Google Chrome, but I tried it in another browser with a similar result.

`Scones and Cones` that's strange chrome should be ok 🤔 ( are you on the latest one Version 119.0.6045.106 or a very old one? perhaps on a tablet? ) so far I only found a small bug with the page titles but I doubt that was the cause 🤔 anyway if you do a right click in chrome and select 'Inspect' do you see anything under Issues? (it should be in lower right corner of the screen)

Scones and Cones

2023-11-03 20:38:17
`Peyo` well.. hm.. There isn't any conflicting issues. I wasn't quite up to date (I think it was just a version or two ago) but that didn't seem to fix it either. The animation is flipping through, but after the first time it gets frozen on a single still frame, even though the stars, in panel hover dialogue, and the webpage itself insists that it is continuing to run the animation.

Peyo
#45
2023-11-03 22:03:22
`Scones and Cones` sounds like that it might be a caching related problem 🤔 I'll try and rewrite the animation with a different method and we will see (probably changing the url for an img element was not that a hot idea after all 🤔 )

`Peyo` Alrighty, thanks for looking into it and sorry for the trouble! Hopefully it's not too much more work. I don't know why this started happening recently though... Ah well. Thanks!

Peyo
#47
2023-11-03 22:57:13
`Scones and Cones` also I realised it might be the timing (so far I could reproduce it on very fast anims - simply the img changes faster than the browser could redraw and i have a 144hz monitor so that might be a key difference: for now I added a minimal change and the animation frame is only updated when the browser redraws the page) just double checking how rare this happens: does it happen on this anim? [https://pchutney.com/strip/185](https://pchutney.com/strip/185)

Alrighty! It sounds plausible. And yes, it does happen on that animation. Basically every animation I've run into recently.

`Peyo` I checked and it's happening to me too, animations are stopping or being jank. Oddly my old dancing animation seems fine so maybe it uses some previous method. But on Carrot's animation I see it cycle once then stop cold.

TeeEffDee

2023-11-04 03:15:56
No I take it back, now that I look I'm seeing freezes but they seem not to stop the animation, but it's definitely chugging.

`Scones and Cones` `TeeEffDee` I replaced the tech, now we use a canvas to draw the animation please check it now scaling of old anims with smaller size got a bit broken in the process - I'm working on it now edit: should be fine now edit2: stars and avatar also got broken (argh) edit3: should be fixed now edit4: and added a quick fix for the first frame our only casuality so far is `Carrot^abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqr new line` 's scale animation hack: [https://pchutney.com/strip/264](https://pchutney.com/strip/264)

please check if flipbooks are ok on your end [https://pchutney.com/strip/147](https://pchutney.com/strip/147) (these still use the old method)

TeeEffDee
#53
2023-11-04 15:21:55
`Peyo` The flipbook seems to work fine (I'm not sure what to look for in the way of errors but didn't see anything amiss) and the animations also seem to be working fine for me again, I checked several and don't see any problems or hitches. As for the scaling hack, I had never seen that previously, and now all I am seeing is an animation of a color change. From the comments it looks like at one time it may have changed the actual size of the frame, but that's not happening now. Just the color change!

`TeeEffDee` music to my ears 👍 it's original form is not lost and you can check it on archive: [https://web.archive.org/web/20220718151213/https://pchutney.com/strip/264](https://web.archive.org/web/20220718151213/https://pchutney.com/strip/264) but I'm not sure if I should bother to restore it (as it seems it was more of a proof of concept and hacking example)

`Peyo` Interesting example, the scaling one! Thanks for backing that up, that was pretty profound. Did it end up being a caching issue that was causing the animation problem?

Peyo
#58
2023-11-04 21:14:31
`TeeEffDee` that is one of my theories anyway or it could be simply that in some browser patch it got broken: not many sites animate things by changing an img's src tag.. or simply a win10 update broke something? there are many possibilites 🤔

TeeEffDee
#59
2023-11-05 00:04:21
`Peyo` By the way if you don't want to spend time explaining this that's fine, I'm just curious because it's interesting. But the way you animate things here on PChutney is by having the src tag change on a timer?

Peyo
#60
2023-11-05 10:56:03
`TeeEffDee` there is not much to explain about it, you pretty much summed up how it worked 🤔 and what changed now is that there is a canvas and the image is drawn on it instead

TeeEffDee

2023-11-05 20:55:37
`Peyo` I looked into it and now I understand! I actually didn't even know about the canvas function but that does seem like a much slicker way to do it since it means you keep control of the page layout. Thanks for the info! And great work getting it functioning right!

The "Don't have an account yet? Get one here!" button on the login page is a bit too wide for mobile, and ends up breaking the layout ![](https://pchutney.com/public/panels/image_1319_1.png) Easiest fix probably would be to make "Don't have an account yet?" plain text and then "Get one here!" be the button/link on a new line
