`Peyo` As has been said truthfully many times the site is wonderful! Thus, I of course must ask for more stuff. I just want to make sure any request like this is taken in the proper light of "things are great, here's something to consider" as opposed to "we NEEEED this!"
However we kinda neeeeeed this.
One thing that would be great is another layer! Right now the top layer is doing a lot of combined work at least on panels I do and one more layer would probably add a lot of dimension to people's work since it gives you a clear layer for background, colors, inks and then overlay effects. That would be the top thing I'd say to consider.
The second would be masking, as in the ability to draw an alpha mask that would block out areas of a layer from being drawn on. Having it simply be hard edged would be fine, but if it was 256 levels of transparency of course that would be 256 times better! That would essentially be the equivalent of adding 256 new features. The main issue there would be the strategy of how it would work. I could see it as a thing that each layer could have, but then again being able to use one mask for the entire composition would be excellent.
The third and probably the hardest and least likely would be a select and move tool such as lasso selection and rectangle selection. This is the one where I have no idea how it would even be handled so I know it's probably not that practical. However, if practical, it would indeed be wonderful.
Thanks for running such a great art site! It's superb!

I guess an extra layer should be possible - that could be added soon
the mask part is i'm not sure of - maybe a layer could be used as the mask? this will need some research
selection will definitely take a long-long time to add
`Peyo` An extra layer would be wonderful! And yes I was pondering over the mask and wasn't sure what would work best, but the idea of a layer being able to be switched to mask mode made sense due to the masking being color agnostic and only relying on transparency. That would definitely be something that would have a lot of room for ways of implementing it.
And yes the selection is more of a pie in the sky thing as I know that's a difficult area even in non-java applications!
I'll be looking forward to breaking in an extra layer and thank you for considering it!
Another layer and selection tool would be so nice! But I understand these things take time and testing. So no hurry at all, just voicing my agreement.
ok just a checklist: so far the extra layer is in
im not sure about the other two yet .. so far it seems the best we could do is rectangular selection only? (and that still brings the problem that you might want one or multiple layers selected etc)
`Peyo` Well honestly selecting for even one layer at a time would be wonderful! Usually the case would be for repositioning an element precisely, so with the ability to do it per layer we could still scoot multiple elements in place to match up! I actually thought selecting would be too tricky on Java but that would be a real dream come true and would eliminate one of the biggest bugbears that currently exists, which is getting things laid in wrong then needing to change them! A single-layer rectangle selection tool in combo with the 4 layers would be dreamy!
And thank you again for the extra layer it seems to work great!
`Peyo` Also something wonderful to have would be the ability to merge layers down on top of each other! So much like the flip layers button where it switches for each other, it would take the layer on top and merge it with the one right under it, leaving one layer with data on it and one layer blank. That, too, would be a big help for making the most out of what's available since a lot of times changes that get made on an upper layer are fine to be baked down onto a layer they are overtop of, which then frees up that upper layer.
right now the merge feature is kinda there but hidden: under FX you can copy the layer and then use the trash button to erase to original
but I guess now we have enough room for a dedicated button for this so that should be my next priority
`Peyo` I had no idea that option existed! o.o That's pretty hidden!!! Yes a dedicated button would be great and would pair up so nicely with that extra layer you added, it would make the workspace feel so free and airy!
ok the merge button turned out to be just a one-afternoon hack-job and is added now
one thing to remember is that it's affected by the alpha slider (update: nevermind)
I was not sure if it's useful or confusing - for now just be aware of this fact
Edit: upon further thought I realised it is confusing - and what am I even doing - apparently I'm still a bit dizzy from my illness
`Peyo` Wow wow wow! Thanks!!! I hope you feel better soon and I hope the sickness is nothing serious! (But they are all pretty serious when in full swing)
